This accessibility statement describes the facilities and services that our South Somerset Visitor Information Centre at Cartgate offers.  We hope that this information will help you, as a visitor to meet your particular access requirements.

Getting to the centre

We are on the A303 the main artillery road to the south west. We are situated of the A303 / A3088 Cartgate Picnic site.  There are ample free parking spaces and on the car park side of the information centre building there are 8 disabled bays.  There is no time limit.

Entrance into the Information Centre

From the car park side of the building, the parking is approximately ten paces. On reaching the entrance there are 2 steps and a hand rail. The door opens outwards and in summer the door will be pinned open. 

From the Café side of the entrance, there is a ramp, hand rail and double doors which open inwards. The doors will be pinned open in summer.

Once inside the building

There is a mix of all-weather carpeting and quarry tiles. There is a large desk in the corner, incorporating a low level desk, A hearing loop, magnifying sheet and seating is also available.  Literature is displayed on hanging cable displays in the window and racking around the walls.  In the centre of the floor there is a display gondola featuring saleable items.  In the left hand corner there is a glass display case, showing work from local artists

We welcome all dogs on leads into the centre.

The Visitor Information Centre sells radar keys.  Lighting is a mix of fluorescent and natural light.  Generally, there is a little background noise

Exits and emergency exits

This is the same as the entrance and is clearly marked and kept clear at all times.  The staff are trained to ensure that visitors are evacuated safely in the event of an alarm.  Please notify staff on arrival if you feel that you may require additional assistance in the event of an alarm / emergency situation.

• On request, the staff will be happy to increase the size of any document (where possible)

Using a photocopier.

• If you require, the Visitor Information Centre has a magnifying sheet that can be used

• The staff are happy to read out any literature that you require.

• We hold lots of information on accessible holidays - accommodation, leisure facilities, walking, beaches, gardens and useful information.

Other information

Some of the staff have had welcome all training, but all of the staff have excellent customer service skills and are ready to help with your particular request.

Getting to the centre

From Pen Mill Station

Out of the station turn left and head  west onto Sherborne Road, cross the road at the Pen Mill hotel, turn right and continue along Sherborne Road,  passing Farm Foods, at the lights cross the road into Middle Street, passing several takeaway establishments, cross at the Pelican crossing, Wetherspoons is on your right, continue on Middle Street , passing Robert Dyas & Primark, until you reach Café Nero on the left, turn immediately left into King George Street, passing Barclays Bank, at the end of the road cross on the Pelican crossing, go right and directly left into Petters Way, the TIC is located in Petters House opposite the magistrates court.

From Yeovil Junction

Bus No. 68 (South West Coaches).

Bus stop:  YEOVIL JUNCTION RAIL STATION N bound.

Alight from the bus at THE BOROUGH, bus stop, (E bound).  You then need to walk for approximately 3 minutes,  cross the road at the Zebra crossing and continue along King George Street (pedestrianized), passing Barclays Bank and the Post Office, at the end of the road cross on the Pelican crossing, go right and directly left into Petters Way, the TIC is located in Petters House opposite the magistrates court.

From the Bus Station

Head to Glovers walk (pedestrianized area), by the Gorge Café, then turn right onto Middle Street, continue along until you arrive at Caffé Nero (having passed Marks and Spencer, Burger King and Superdrug), turn immediately left into King George Street, passing Barclays Bank and the Post Office, at the end of the road cross on the Pelican crossing, go right and directly left into Petters Way, the TIC is located in Petters House opposite the magistrates court.

Disabled Parking

Parking for Blue Badge holders

For all the information about parking with your blue badge, please refer to your booklet that would have been issued with the badge.  We encourage you to check the on street signs for any restrictions that may be in place when visiting our area.

Our Blue Badge Voucher Parking Scheme allows participants to receive up to 50% off parking charges in Yeovil, Chard, Crewkerne and Ilminster. You can purchase a book of vouchers, which can then be displayed with your Blue Badge.

Car parking vouchers for use in Council owned car parks only may be purchased from:

  • Council Offices, Lace Mill, Holyrood Street, Chard, Somerset, TA20 2YA, between 9.00am and 3.30pm Monday to Friday

Following a review of car park charges for Blue Badge Holders, for every parking voucher purchased an additional 60 minutes free will be added when the accompanying Blue Badge is displayed.

MOBILITY

You may need extra help to get around on your break and here in South Somerset we have the following mobility hire companies that can help you.  It's also worth noting that some of the attractions do hire out wheelchairs and more robust trampers at some of the gardens (bookable in advance).  Please check directly with the individual websites for up to date detailed information.

Shopmobility Yeovil is a scheme providing manual and powered scooters to enable people with limited mobility to shop and use other pleasure/leisure facilities in Yeovil. Transportable equipment is also available for hire at www.yeovilshopmobility.co.uk

Wheelchairs are available to borrow and hire from the British Red Cross www.redcross.org.uk/get-help/borrow-a-wheelchair

Entrance into the Yeovil Tourist Information Centre

The parking is approximately 30 paces from the building's entrance. There are four steps and a hand rail. Or alternatively there is a ramp with a hand rail. The doors are automatic and open outwards and in the summer are fixed open.

Once inside the building

On entering the shared service's building the flooring is all weather and then carpeted. There is a large desk on the right and the tourist information centre is located on the left hand side of the desk, incorporating a low level desk, a hearing loop is available as well as a magnifying sheet. There is also seating available.

Literature is displayed on hanging cable displays in the window and racking around the walls.

Our Yeovil Tourist Information Centre is open as follows ~

CURRENTLY CLOSED FOR FORSEEABLE FUTURE DUE TO COVID-19, APRIL 2020

The nearest Tourist Information centre is at Cartgate open seven days a week from March to October 9.30 - 3.30.
